Vic Chesnutt Songwriter Awards
This afternoon I’ll be playing three of my songs as part of a live-streamed concert at the Vic Chesnutt Songwriter Awards in Athens, Georgia. Vic Chesnutt was a remarkable songwriter who first came to fame in the ‘90s via Michael Stipe of REM, who like Vic lived in Athens, and was one of Vic’s biggest fans. During his short life, Chesnutt’s haunting, personal, sometimes mordantly dark songs (paralyzed in a car crash in his teens, he sang and played from his wheelchair) won him a large and loyal indie following.
His hometown still celebrates him with an annual awards show. The great Jim White, as well as Drive By Truckers’ Patterson Hood and other local musicians will be playing songs in this concert, including the winning songwriters, some professional, some amateur. I’m so glad they invited me to join them. I’ll be beaming in from the other side of the country, San Francisco, where I’ll be playing in a local studio, accompanied by a very fine S.F musician, singer-songwriter Brad Brooks. Here we are, all dressed up and ready to go!
Here’s a link to the live stream on YouTube. It starts at 6.30pm East Coast time, 3.30 pm Pacific Time.
