‘Sad Songs with Sylvie Simmons on The John Allen Show.’
Born and raised in London, Sylvie Simmons ran away to Los Angeles in the late ’70s to become a rock critic. Widely regarded for her early writings at Sounds, Cream and Kerrang!, as well as later at The Guardian, Rolling Stone and chiefly at MOJO since the magazine’s inception, she has also written books on Serge Gainsbourg, Neil Young, and most recently, Leonard Cohen. All the while she has been studying the art of the song, particularly sad songs. This month marks the magical debut of a singer and musician who’s spent her whole life in music but hasn’t gone public until now. “Sylvie” is a hauntingly beautiful collection of ukelele songs, just released on Light In The Attic, that is dreamy, intimate and timeless. This in-studio performance will be followed with selections of sad songs Sylvie chose from the FMU library.

A special pre-Hanukkah event celebrating Leonard Cohen.
‘Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen attributed the source of his music to Jewish liturgy, “the sound of the Jewish voice raised in prayer or adoration or praise. Those are the kinds of modes that touched me and informed me.” In writing her authorized biography of Cohen, journalist Sylvie Simmons interviewed more than one hundred of those closest to him, including his bar mitzvah teacher, his current rabbi, his fellow monks at the Mount Baldy Zen Center where he was ordained a Buddhist monk, as well as the mother of his children, musicians, record producers, literary editors, and Cohen himself. NPR’s All Things Considered named I’m Your Man the best biography of the year in 2012. Sylvie Simmons is an award-winning writer and rock journalist. Her previous books include the cult short story collection Too Weird for Ziggy, as well as biographies of Neil Young and French Jewish singer Serge Gainsbourg. Sylvie is also a singer, songwriter, and recording artist. She tours the world reading from her book, talking about Cohen and singing his songs, accompanying herself on ukulele.’
Bring books (and anything else!) for Sylvie to sign. She’ll also be selling copies of the paperback edition of I’m Your Man – they make great holiday presents!!
