I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love and admire Marianne Faithfull. I interviewed her many times over the years - and they’re some of my favourite interviews ever, smart, hilarious and brutally honest. After meeting her in Paris when I was writing my book on Serge Gainsbourg, whom she knew well, we became friends.
If you go to my “Writing” page, you can read an interview we did back in 2005, when she came to San Francisco to appear in The Black Writer, the musical play by William Boroughs, Tom Waits and Robert Wilson. Her role? The Devil!
The last piece I wrote on her was a week ago, and the saddest: her obituary. It will be in the upcoming issue of MOJO magazine.
Marianne died in London on January 31st, aged 1978. I will miss her fiercely.
